Do you have a 'Second Life'? Well, you very well could!

Hey everyone, I just was posting on Amy's blog and I happened to give an example of "Second Life" the computer simulation ( the first online virtual reality-esc game) and how it is replacing the lives of many. I want to develop this subject of Second Life for criticism. But so far I'm just posting this link to provide you with a feel for what I'm talking about when someone says "Second Life"--

I too have reservation about Second Life. I have yet to login because I am afraid of what I might find... or how much I might enjoy it as compared to my ACTUAL life. With more and more individuals migrating toward it and entrepreneurs making the most of it from the outset (some more successful than others) it has the potential to drastically decrease in the flesh, human contact. I already feel as if my contact with friends is reduced to somewhat of a shorthand with email, if I email someone it spares my having to take the time to call them and have that in depth conversation that I really don’t have time for. Would Second Life allow me to have a closer version of those conversations than email does, or would it spare me from needing to have them at all?

Good points, Tyann. Kevin, this was an extremely informative article--I had no idea how Second Life worked.

Thanks all, I'm pretty sure that second life has a foundation for substantial research, and I know that when I've tried to log on to Second Life, to be perfectly honest was afraid of the evolution of technology.

Second life has potential for a lot of things. It hasn't been around that long and people are already making their livings by selling things on the site. The fact that people will pay for things that only exist on this one site for use in another world is something I can't understand (I'm broke spending money on this life). I worry about second life because so many people already spend so much time chatting, on myspace, etc., and this site seems like an opportunity to totally not check in with reality at all.

I've also heard that discrimination is pretty widespread on the site. If people make their characters unattractive, others will be really mean to them. So, if you look like a dork in real life, you better make yourself attractive in second life. I would think people would be more understanding on a site like that, but that's what I get for thinking.
